The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the “Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act,” H.R. 4468 this week. The SEMA ACTION NETWORK supported bill aims to stop the Environmental Protection Agency from implementing new federal emissions standards which would restrict consumer choice promoting only electric vehicles vs other competing automotive technologies. The Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act would prevent the EPA from imposing regulations that require specific technologies or limit the availability of vehicles based on engine type.
The Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act aims to protect the right of Americans to choose the technology for their future vehicle, modifying the Clean Air Act.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) weeks strict federal emissions standards for motor vehicle years 2027 to 2032. The aim of the EPA standard is to boost the sale of electric vehicles (EVs). The EPA predicts their new regulations will force automakers to sell greater than two-thirds electric vehicles by year 2032.
If Congress allows the EPA’s proposed regulations to go unchecked a negative impact on the automotive manufacturing, the aftermarket automotive business, employees, and millions of automotive enthusiasts will be adversely affected. The EPA’s proposed rules only focuses on emissions from the tailpipe, ignoring the overall environmental impact of mining, transporting raw materials, manufacturing and operating vehicle over the car’s lifespan. The EPA should take into account the concerns of the automotive industry and consumers, and amend its proposal to be technology-neutral, allowing for multiple solutions reducing vehicle emissions.
