Website Korea JoongAng Daily has reported that Genesis has decided to set the handbrake on Kia Stinger’s sister car, the Genesis G70. The G70 was Genesis’ first performance sedan. Genesis is the luxury brand for Hyundai Motors.
According to the article an internal company announcement calls a halt to RN2’s production, the internal project name for what is marketed as the G70. Sales have been in lower quantities than what the company wanted. While a plan was on the table to come out with a larger and EV G70, it was scrapped as it was too close to the G80 in size, encroaching on its place in the line-up. Korea sales figures for the G70 in 2019 was 16,975 sold. That number is now down to 2,099 per year.
Hyundai Motor declined to comment, adding “nothing has been confirmed.”
