A class action lawsuit has been filed against Hyundai, alleging that the paint and clear coat on its Genesis model vehicles peels off prematurely. Owners have reported receiving little response from Hyundai when presenting their complaints. Despite repair costs ranging from $200 to $1,800, many have chosen to ignore the defect due to the expense. The lawsuit argues that this issue is preventable, as other cars with similar coatings don’t experience it. The Genesis line was sold under the Hyundai brand until 2016 and has been marketed at a premium, despite the defect. The claim indicates that oxidation, which can start within 2-3 years of purchase, causes the paint to dull and change color. The lawsuit seeks monetary compensation, costs, attorneys’ fees, and court expenses for Genesis owners in New York.
The Hyundai class action lawsuit, Russo v. Hyundai Motor America (Case No. 2:24-cv-01914), is being brought before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York Central Islip. The plaintiff in the case is represented by attorney Spencer Sheehan of Sheehan & Associates PC.
